BMW has launched its new 5-Series starting with the 535i, 530d, 523i and 525d.The 5-Series range begins at Rs 38.9 lakhs (ex-showroom). The 535i will a complete CBU, while the rest of the cars will be manufactured in BMW’s Chennai plant. The sixth-generation 5-Series (F10) has been built on the modified 7-Series chassis. The new 5-Series is bigger and heavier than the outgoing 5-Series model.
The new 5-Series sports a 7-Series look alike front grille, however the profile is more like the 3-Series. The new monocoque chassis sports double wishbone with cast-aluminium control arms at its front and Integral-V at its rear. This sedan will even feature a 8-speed transmission for the first time.
The 535i churns out 305bhp which is more the Mercerdes-Benz E-Class which produces about 272bhp of power. Since, the new 5-Series has a larger chassis, there is more space for the rear passengers. Even the interiors design theme is similar to the 7. The Munich automaker based in Chennai seems to be confident of the 5-Series and the company will produce 4000units a year. The CKD models have 10% local content. Will the 5-Series overthrow the E-Class? Only time will answer that.
